Funding available through Farming Connect Whole Farm Plan

We are working in partnership with Farming Connect and WLBP (Welsh Lamb and Beef Promotions) to provide Veterinary Mentoring and guidance. This is open to all farmers, not just those who are members of WLBP.

Health and management planning involves setting goals, keeping records, decision making, acting on the decisions and asking if the goals have been achieved. This is usually repeated every 12 months. Through a Veterinary Health Plan, veterinary knowledge can be drawn on from all aspects of the farm, including nutrition, health, vaccination, routine procedures, grassland management and reproduction, fertility as well as handling systems and housing.

The main risk to livestock enterprises are ill-health and poor welfare, we believe that we are best placed to advise you in these areas as part of your farm management team.

Farming Connect Veterinary Mentor Scheme

As part of the new Farming Connect Scheme we are able to offer services under the Whole Farm Plan – Animal Welfare and Technical Veterinary. 

As part of a Farm Health Plan we are able to offer mentoring to assist you in looking at the bigger picture for your farm business.  We can work together to reach your vision for the future.  We offer one to one support which can allow us to spend time on your holding advising and developing plans for the future with regard to both health and welfare. 

Under the Scheme you are able to apply for 5 days of support up to 2013.  You must apply for 1 day initially and you can apply for further half days.  The day can be split into a number of shorter visits over a six month period.  This is open to discussion depending on the issues and/or problems you wish to tackle. 
Under the new scheme farm businesses are then able to claim back 80% of the costs from Farming Connect.   

Some problems we envisage assisting with include:

• Mastitis Investigations, including increased Somatic Cell Counts
• Pneumonia; including treatment options, prevention, vaccination and building modification
• Whole Farm Health Planning, using WLPB’s online health planning tool http://healthplan.wlbp.co.uk
• Lameness investigation; including lameness scoring, treatments and prevention
• Handling Facilities
• Abortion and poor fertility investigations
• Fluke and worm treatment
• Ectoparasite (flies, midges, scab or lice) treatment

(Laboratory testing and drugs are not covered by the Farming Connect Scheme)
Please ring the Surgery to discuss any problems or issues you would like assistance and advice with.  It takes about 10 days to obtain funding approval from Farming Connect.
